These types of carriages were primarily used to transport passengers in the cities at the end of the 19th Century. Inspired by the ?Berliner? or Sedan cars, they were developed around 1880 in the United States where they were called gondolas; from there they travelled to Cuba and then on to Spain, primarily in Barcelona were they were used as cars for hire (taxi). Its main feature was the hood which is prolonged on the postillion or driver seat, which was located at the same height as the passengers. This is what distinguished it from similar carriages of that epoch such as the sedan or the cabriole, in which the postillion was higher and uncovered.
