MiniArt's German Checkpoint is an extensive diorama set that allows you to build a complete World War II-era German checkpoint scene. The kit combines two vehicles—a 3-ton 3.6-36S truck and a Kfz.1 Type 170VK light off-road vehicle—with five Feldgendarmerie (military police) figures and numerous checkpoint infrastructure elements.
The kit is designed as a complete diorama scene. In addition to the two vehicles, it includes the checkpoint's own equipment and five military police figures. This allows for the depiction of a traffic control scenario with vehicles stopped at the post, enabling the creation of a detailed scene without the need to source basic infrastructure elements from other kits.
The 3.6-36S truck represents the type of vehicle used by the Wehrmacht to transport troops, equipment, and supplies. The Kfz.1 Type 170VK, meanwhile, is a light off-road vehicle designed for tasks such as liaison, reconnaissance, and command. Combining them effectively captures the daily traffic at a German checkpoint.
This kit requires assembly and painting. It involves gluing together the vehicle parts, figures, and diorama elements. Glue and paints are not included and must be purchased separately. However, the kit does include photo-etched parts and decals.
The Feldgendarmerie was the German military police force responsible for maintaining order within the armed forces and controlling military traffic. Its duties included checking documents, directing traffic, monitoring military roads, searching for deserters, and enforcing army regulations.
Checkpoints manned by the Feldgendarmerie could be located either behind the front lines or near areas of active combat. Barriers, guard booths, and road signage systems allowed for the control of troop, vehicle, and transport movements. A distinctive feature of the gendarmes' equipment was the metal *Ringkragen* (gorget) worn on a chain across the chest, which made them easily recognizable while performing their duties.
The Kfz.1 Type 170VK was a military off-road vehicle developed for the Wehrmacht based on the Mercedes-Benz 170V design. Compared to the civilian model, it featured modifications such as all-wheel drive and reinforced components adapted for military service. The vehicle was used for personnel transport, as a liaison vehicle, and as a staff car on various fronts during World War II.
The Mercedes-Benz W136, also known as the 170V, was introduced in 1936. It was a mid-sized car originally intended for the civilian market. After the outbreak of the war, many units were requisitioned by the German armed forces for military service. Vehicles of this family saw action on numerous fronts right up to the end of the war.
The 3.6-36S three-ton truck was part of the large fleet of German trucks used to transport personnel, supplies, and equipment. Vehicles of this type formed the backbone of Wehrmacht motor transport and were essential both in the immediate rear areas of combat units and on the supply lines leading to the front.
The presence of the truck at a checkpoint illustrates the importance of traffic control to the functioning of the German army.
Military transports had to be routed along specific paths, and vehicles and personnel were subject to checks while moving between units and operational areas.Both marking variants relate to France in 1944—a period of intense combat operations following the Allied landings in Normandy. At that time, German roads were heavily used by moving units, supply columns, and military vehicles, increasing the importance of the services responsible for traffic control and organization.
