Avro Lancaster B Mk.I from HK Models is a highly detailed model of one of the most famous British heavy bombers of the Second World War. Developed in 1:48 scale, the kit features a detailed interior, bomb bay and characteristic four-engined configuration of the Lancaster.
The model consists of 362 parts. Despite being more compact than the larger 1:32 scale version, the kit retains finely reproduced panel lines and rivet detail. It also includes detailed Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, the crew compartment, gun positions and bomb bay.
The interior is highly detailed and includes the pilots' cockpit, crew positions and radio and navigation equipment. Particular attention has been given to the bomb bay, where the characteristic equipment of the bomber can be displayed.
The kit also includes detailed Merlin engine components. The engine cowling parts feature moulded lines on their inner surfaces to facilitate cutting, allowing selected engine nacelles to be displayed open and the engines to be shown in detail.
The model features finely reproduced panel lines and rivet detail. The main wheels have realistically flattened tyres, while the clear parts feature clearly defined framing, making masking and painting easier.
One of the marking options represents Lancaster W4118 "ZN-Y" of No. 106 Squadron RAF. The second represents R5868 "PO-S" of No. 467 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force. The decals are printed by Cartograf, and the instructions include colour painting guides with references to AK, Tamiya and Gunze/Mr. Hobby paint ranges.
The model is supplied unassembled and requires gluing and painting. Construction requires plastic model cement and suitable modelling paints. Glue and paints are not included in the kit.
The Avro Lancaster was developed from the unsuccessful twin-engined Avro Manchester. Although the Manchester's basic design was sound, the new aircraft received a larger wingspan and four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines instead of the unreliable pair of Rolls-Royce Vultures.
The prototype, initially designated Manchester III, made its first flight on 9 January 1941. The aircraft quickly demonstrated excellent handling characteristics and a substantial bomb-carrying capability. It was soon named Lancaster and entered service with RAF Bomber Command in early 1942.
The B Mk.I was powered by Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. The externally similar Lancaster B Mk.III used Packard-built Merlin engines manufactured in the United States. The B Mk.II was instead equipped with Bristol Hercules radial engines, providing an alternative in case of shortages of Merlin engines.
One of the Lancaster's most important features was its exceptionally large bomb bay, approximately 10 metres long. It could carry substantial bomb loads as well as specialised weapons developed for particular operations.
Lancasters took part in many of the RAF's most famous operations, including the raid on the MAN works in Augsburg, the famous "Dambusters" raid against the dams of the Ruhr Valley and operations against the German battleship Tirpitz. Specially modified aircraft were capable of carrying the enormous 12,000 lb Tallboy bomb and the 22,000 lb Grand Slam earthquake bomb.
The Lancaster quickly became the principal heavy bomber of RAF Bomber Command and remained one of Britain's most important bomber aircraft until the end of the war. In addition to conventional bombing missions, it performed specialised tasks including supply drops for the Dutch population and the transport of returning prisoners of war.
After the war, the Lancaster was adapted for a variety of specialised roles. It was used for jet engine testing and for experiments with aerial refuelling systems. Aircraft of this type also served with Coastal Command, with the last RAF Lancasters finally being withdrawn from service in October 1956.
A total of 7,377 Lancasters were built in Britain and Canada. Thanks to its effectiveness, distinctive appearance and participation in some of the RAF's most important operations, the Lancaster became one of the enduring symbols of British bomber aviation during the Second World War.
