The IL-38 Russian anti-submarine aircraft was developed in the Ilyushin Experimental Design Bureau on the basis of the IL-18V passenger aircraft in the early 1960s. The airplane is destined to search and to destroy enemy submarines alone or together with anti-submarine ships, for maritime reconnaissance, search and rescue operations and setting mine fields. Piloted by test pilot Vladimir Konstantinovich Kokkinaki IL-38 made its first flight on 27 September 1961. Adopted on 17 January 1969. Its serial production lasted till 1972. A total of 65 aircraft were built.
