After the Allied failure at Market Garden, it became obvious that the port of Antwerp was crucial for Allied supplies. This meant that the Scheldt estuary was to be cleared from German troops, specially at the island of Walcheren. British troops, supported by armour of the 79th Armoured Division landed at Westkapelle and Vlissingen on november 1, 1944, facing a tough and bloody fight in harsh winter conditions on the flooded island.
