In the Soviet Union in the 1930s, Nikolay Nikolayevich Polikarpov (1892-1944) was called the "King of Fighters". His aircraft always were superior to their opponents at the time of their creation. It was so with I-15, and I-16, and I-153, and... with I-200. A total of about 80 aircraft of various types were developed by N. N. Polikarpov. The most advanced fighter Polikarpov I-185 - a single-engined piston monoplane, was prepared in his Bureau for mass production in 1943. On the sum of all its characteristics the I-185 excelled both serial and experimental Soviet and foreign fighters in its class at that time. It was successfully confirmed during the military tests on the Kalinin Front in December 1942 - January 1943. After the death of N. N. Polikarpov and some reforms, in 1953 the famous Design Bureau was headed by another outstanding aircraft designer of the 20th century - Pavel Osipovich Sukhoy. The Sukhoy's Bureau worthy continued the glorious tradition of the "King" - to create the world's best fighters!
