The Lockheed Hudson Mk.III by ICM is a detailed model of the British reconnaissance and bomber aircraft used during World War II. The kit allows for the assembly of one of four marking variants representing aircraft from the Royal Air Force and the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
The model accurately reproduces the Hudson's distinctive silhouette, featuring a glazed nose, twin radial engines, and retractable landing gear.
The kit's design allows for a detailed reproduction of both the aircraft's exterior surfaces and selected interior features.A distinctive feature of the Mk.III version is the retractable machine-gun position located in the lower fuselage, designed to defend the aircraft's rear hemisphere.
The Lockheed Hudson was developed from the civilian Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra airliner. In 1938, the British Purchasing Commission sought an aircraft in the United States for Royal Air Force patrol duties. Lockheed proposed a modified version of the Model 14, adapted by—among other changes—adding a glazed nose section for the navigator and bombardier.
A contract for 200 aircraft was signed in June 1938. The Hudson thus became the first American aircraft to enter Royal Air Force service during World War II.
The aircraft performed a wide range of tasks. It was used for maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare, convoy escort, and bombing missions, among other roles. Hudsons also participated in covert operations involving the insertion of agents and resistance members into occupied Europe. Later in the war, some aircraft were used for transport and training purposes.
The Mk.III version appeared in 1940. The aircraft was powered by two Wright Cyclone radial engines, each producing 1,200 hp, and featured a retractable ventral gun position for rear defense.
Hudsons served in numerous units across various theaters of war. The variants included in the kit represent aircraft operating from locations such as Iceland, Cuba, and New Zealand, illustrating the diverse roles this aircraft type played during World War II.
This model requires assembly and painting. Plastic model glue and appropriate model paints are needed for construction.
