Legends – Douglas Bader – Triple Pack is a special set commemorating the remarkable career of one of Britain's most famous fighter pilots. The box contains three complete aircraft models – the Bristol Bulldog Mk.IIA, Hawker Hurricane Mk.I and Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa – representing different stages of Douglas Bader's career, from his early RAF service to his wartime achievements.
The set contains a total of 414 parts and is rated at skill level 3, making it a suitable choice for modellers with some previous experience.
Bristol Bulldog Mk.IIA K-1676 represents the early stage of Bader's RAF career. After joining the service, Bader was assigned to No. 23 Squadron at Kenley, where he flew aircraft including the Gloster Gladiator and Bristol Bulldog. The Bulldog became particularly associated with his early career and established him as a highly skilled military aviator.
Hawker Hurricane Mk.I V7467 represents Bader's wartime service during the Battle of Britain. He flew the Hurricane in combat and achieved a number of aerial victories during the campaign. The aircraft's distinctive camouflage and RAF markings make this version an attractive subject for a display collection.
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa P7966 represents another important stage of Bader's wartime career. Bader flew Spitfires in combat and later commanded a fighter wing at Tangmere. The Spitfire became one of the aircraft most closely associated with his wartime achievements.
The models are supplied as unassembled plastic kits and require gluing and painting. Construction requires plastic model cement and suitable modelling paints. The set includes decals and painting instructions for the featured aircraft.
Douglas Bader joined the Royal Air Force in 1928 and was commissioned in July 1930. He was assigned to No. 23 Squadron at Kenley, where he flew the Gloster Gladiator and later the Bristol Bulldog.
On 14 December 1931, Bader was seriously injured in a low-altitude aerobatic accident while flying a Bulldog at the Reading Aero Club. He lost both legs as a result of the crash, but remained determined to return to the RAF. Following extensive rehabilitation and the use of specially designed prosthetic legs, he eventually achieved his goal.
With the outbreak of the Second World War, Bader returned to operational flying. He flew both the Hurricane and Spitfire in combat, achieving 22 aerial victories. During the Battle of Britain he commanded No. 242 Squadron and later became a fighter wing commander at Tangmere.
On 9 August 1941, Bader was forced to abandon his Spitfire over France and was captured by German forces. He remained a prisoner of war for the rest of the conflict. Despite repeated escape attempts, he did not regain his freedom until the final stages of the war.
At the end of the war, Bader returned to Britain and famously led a formation of Spitfires during the victory flypast over London, bringing his extraordinary RAF career full circle.
The three models provide an interesting way of presenting different stages of Douglas Bader's aviation career. The Bulldog represents his formative years as a pilot, the Hurricane his combat service during the Battle of Britain, and the Spitfire his later wartime career and leadership role. Together they form a distinctive collection dedicated to one of the most remarkable figures in the history of the Royal Air Force.
