History of the Original

The Roman Army was one of the most disciplined, organised and effective military forces of the ancient world. Through rigorous training, exceptional discipline and innovative tactics, the Roman legions enabled the Republic and later the Roman Empire to conquer and defend vast territories across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East for centuries.

The legion formed the backbone of the Roman military. Each legion consisted of several thousand professional soldiers trained to fight in close formation using the famous gladius sword and pilum throwing spear, while being protected by the large rectangular scutum shield. Experienced centurions commanded smaller units and were responsible for discipline and battlefield leadership, while standard bearers carried the legion's sacred standards, symbols of honour and identity. The organisation, training and battlefield tactics of the Roman legions influenced military doctrine for many centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire.
