The T-62 tank was introduced into service in 1961. It was characterized primarily by its new, 115 mm U-5TS (2A20) smoothbore gun, which gave it a firepower superiority over older designs. It was also the first tank in the world to be standardly equipped with a smoothbore gun instead of the classic rifled barrel.
The T-62 was not only used by the Soviet Army but also exported to many Eastern Bloc countries, the Middle East, and Africa. It participated in numerous armed conflicts, such as the Yom Kippur War, the Iran-Iraq War, and the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan.
The T-62's main advantages include a simple, damage-resistant design, a powerful gun, and relatively low maintenance requirements. However, over time, disadvantages emerged, such as a slow automatic loader and limited mobility compared to newer Western tanks.
Despite its age, the T-62 can still be found in the arsenals of some countries, a testament to its durability and well-thought-out design.
