USS Missouri BB-63 – A Brief History of the Famous Battleship

USS Missouri BB-63 is one of the most famous American battleships, also known by the nickname "Mighty Mo." It was the fourth Iowa-class ship and entered service with the United States Navy during World War II.

Construction of the battleship began in 1941 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York, and it was launched in 1944. The ship distinguished itself by its enormous firepower, fast propulsion, and modern technical solutions.

  • Length: 270.43 m
  • Crew: approximately 2,700
  • Main armament: nine 406 mm guns
  • Propulsion: four propellers, 212,000 hp
  • Maximum speed: 33 knots

The USS Missouri is famous for being the ship on which the Japanese surrender agreement, ending World War II, was signed on September 2, 1945. After the war, the ship also served in the Korean and Persian Gulf conflicts before being finally decommissioned.

Currently, the USS Missouri is preserved as a museum ship in Hawaii, docked at Pearl Harbor. Visitors can admire not only the impressive size of the battleship, but also the places where key decisions in 20th-century history were made.
