Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H

The Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. H was one of the most widely produced versions of the German Pz.Kpfw. IV tank. Production of this variant began in 1943, and the vehicles quickly became one of the primary types of German medium tanks. The Ausf. H featured, among other improvements, increased frontal armor and distinctive additional side and turret shielding.

Its main armament was the 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48 gun, which was more effective against Allied and Soviet tanks than the shorter guns used in earlier versions of the Pz.Kpfw. IV. This armament was complemented by two 7.92 mm MG 34 machine guns.

During the production run of the Ausf. H, numerous design changes and simplifications were introduced, driven by combat experience and the need to accelerate production rates. Consequently, individual vehicles could vary in terms of specific equipment, armor configuration, and running gear details.

History and Deployment

The Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H was deployed on all major fronts where German armored forces fought. Tanks of this type saw action on the Eastern Front, in North Africa, in Italy, and in Western Europe, among other theaters.

As increasingly heavily armored enemy tanks appeared, the Pz.Kpfw. IV gradually lost its armament advantage; however, thanks to ongoing upgrades, it remained a valuable combat vehicle until the end of the war. Its design also served as the basis for numerous self-propelled guns and other specialized vehicles.
