Description

A New Generation of Chinese Support Vehicles

This model represents the Chinese Type 100 tracked support vehicle, one of the newest armoured vehicles associated with the People's Liberation Army (PLA). The vehicle was first publicly presented during the military parade in Beijing on 3 September 2025 and was developed alongside the new-generation Type 100 main battle tank. Rather than being a conventional infantry fighting vehicle, it is intended to provide support and escort capabilities within a highly networked armoured formation.

Takom's kit uses new tooling and reproduces the vehicle's distinctive angular hull and unmanned turret. The model includes a workable suspension and wheels, workable individual track links and workable armament. All hatches can be displayed open or closed, while the kit also includes clear and photo-etched parts. A drone can be represented either stowed on the vehicle or deployed in flight. Two marking options are included.

A Networked Battlefield Support Vehicle

The Type 100 is part of a new approach to armoured warfare being developed by China, in which traditional armoured vehicles are increasingly integrated with digital command, surveillance and unmanned systems. The vehicle is intended to operate alongside the Type 100 tank and to contribute to reconnaissance, protection and the exchange of battlefield information within the formation.

One of the most distinctive features is the unmanned turret. It carries an automatic cannon and is designed to engage a variety of ground targets while also offering a high elevation angle that can be useful against low-flying threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles. The vehicle is also equipped with a coaxial machine gun and an extensive collection of optical and electronic sensors. citeturn0search2turn0search8

The integration of a drone into the vehicle's equipment is particularly interesting. The drone can be represented in the model either in its stowed position or deployed in flight, allowing the modeller to depict the vehicle in different operational situations. This feature reflects the increasing importance of unmanned aerial systems in reconnaissance and battlefield awareness.

Vehicle specifications

  • type: tracked support and escort vehicle,
  • country of origin: People's Republic of China,
  • first public presentation: Beijing, 3 September 2025,
  • crew: approximately 2 personnel according to preliminary published information,
  • main armament: automatic cannon mounted in an unmanned turret,
  • secondary armament: coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun,
  • powerplant: high-output hybrid propulsion system according to currently published information,
  • role: armoured support, escort, reconnaissance and networked battlefield operations.

Many technical details of the Type 100 remain undisclosed. Published estimates concerning its weight, dimensions, engine output, range and other performance figures vary considerably and should therefore be treated as preliminary rather than official specifications. For this reason, these uncertain figures are not presented here as confirmed data.

Working Together with the Type 100 Tank

The Type 100 support vehicle was developed as part of a larger armoured system rather than as an isolated vehicle. Its intended cooperation with the Type 100 main battle tank reflects a concept in which different platforms share information and complement one another's capabilities.

The support vehicle can provide additional sensors, firepower and protection for the armoured formation. Its electronic systems and observation equipment are intended to improve situational awareness and allow information about potential targets and threats to be distributed throughout the formation.

This approach is representative of the growing emphasis on network-centric warfare, in which combat vehicles are connected through digital communication systems and can share information from multiple sensors. Unmanned aerial and ground systems can further extend the range of observation while reducing the exposure of personnel.

Armament and Protection

The unmanned turret is one of the most prominent elements of the Type 100. Mounting the main weapon in an unmanned turret allows the crew to remain inside the protected hull rather than occupying the turret itself. The weapon system is designed to provide fire support against ground targets and can be elevated to engage targets at higher angles.

The vehicle also incorporates a coaxial machine gun and a range of optical and electronic equipment. These systems are an important part of a modern combat vehicle, where detection, identification and rapid exchange of information can be just as important as the weapon itself.

Available descriptions also indicate the use of active protection and other advanced defensive systems. However, detailed information about the exact configuration and capabilities of these systems has not been officially disclosed.

A Very Modern Subject for a Scale Model

The Type 100 is an unusual modelling subject because the real vehicle is itself extremely new. Unlike the majority of military models representing vehicles with decades of documented service, this kit depicts a design that was first publicly revealed only in 2025.

The vehicle's angular armour, unmanned turret, extensive sensor equipment and drone make it particularly attractive to modellers interested in contemporary military technology. The workable suspension and individual track links also allow the model to be positioned on uneven terrain, while the open or closed hatches provide additional possibilities for displaying the finished vehicle.

The drone option gives the modeller another way to create a dynamic scene. A stowed drone can be used for a vehicle at rest or moving with an armoured column, while the airborne configuration can suggest an active reconnaissance mission.

The Model in a Diorama

The Type 100 is particularly well suited to a modern military diorama. It can be displayed alongside the Type 100 tank or other contemporary Chinese military vehicles, creating a scene representing a networked armoured formation. A deployed drone can further emphasise the reconnaissance and surveillance role of the vehicle.

The model can also be presented independently as a display piece. Its unusual silhouette and relatively rare subject make it an interesting choice for a collection focused on contemporary armoured vehicles and the latest developments in military technology.
