These tools are powered by permanent magnet direct current motors that operate from transformers with outputs up to 18 volts. The combination of a DC motor and a transformer has a number of advantages which are: low voltage for extra safety, smaller tools as the motors are smaller and lighter, ample power for small, detailed tasks.
