This model kit represents the German 3.7 cm PaK 36 anti-tank gun mounted on a captured British Universal Carrier, commonly known as the Bren Carrier. This improvised self-propelled gun combines the mobility of a lightweight tracked vehicle with the anti-tank weaponry used by the Wehrmacht during the Second World War.

Following the capture of British equipment during the 1940 campaign in France, the Germans introduced numerous Universal Carriers into service under the designation Bren 731(e), where the letter “e” indicated British origin. Some vehicles were modified to carry additional armament, including the 3.7 cm PaK 36 anti-tank gun.

Mounting the gun on a tracked carrier improved battlefield mobility and made it possible to relocate the firing position more quickly than with a conventional towed gun. However, the open fighting compartment offered the crew limited protection against enemy fire. Vehicles of this type were used for various combat-support and anti-tank duties.

The 3.7 cm PaK 36 Anti-Tank Gun

The 3.7 cm PaK 36 was the standard German anti-tank gun at the beginning of the Second World War. Its low weight made it relatively easy to transport and operate, while its compact design allowed it to be towed by light vehicles or moved by its crew. As tank armour improved, the weapon became less effective against heavily armoured vehicles, but it remained useful against light tanks, armoured cars and other lightly protected targets.
