U.S. 75 mm Pack Howitzer M1A1 on Carriage M8 from Riich Models is a dual-combo set containing two complete models of the American 75 mm M1A1 pack howitzer mounted on the M8 carriage. Designed for transport across difficult terrain, this lightweight artillery piece was widely used by American airborne units and the U.S. Marine Corps during the Second World War.
The set allows the modeller to build two detailed representations of the American M1A1 pack howitzer fitted with the M8 carriage. Having two guns included makes it possible to present the artillery pieces in different configurations, such as during transport, preparation of a firing position or combat operations.
The kit includes metal gun barrels, 3D-printed components and several types of ammunition and ammunition boxes. These accessories add variety and allow the modeller to reproduce the equipment used by the gun crews.
The compact design of the weapon makes it suitable for dioramas depicting airborne operations, jungle warfare, mountain terrain or artillery units operating alongside infantry formations.
The models are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Due to the small size of many components and the inclusion of 3D-printed parts, precise modelling tools are recommended during construction.
Plastic components should be assembled using cement intended for plastic model kits. Metal and 3D-printed parts are best attached with cyanoacrylate adhesive.
Glue, paints and modelling tools are not included and must be purchased separately.
The M1 pack howitzer was developed in the United States in 1927 as a lightweight artillery weapon capable of being transported over difficult terrain. Its construction allowed it to be dismantled into several loads and carried by pack animals, making it particularly useful in mountainous regions and areas without suitable roads.
Low weight and compact dimensions also allowed the weapon to be transported by aircraft and gliders or towed by light vehicles. These characteristics made it especially valuable to airborne units and the U.S. Marine Corps, which often operated in areas where heavier artillery could not easily be deployed.
The M1A1 was one of the important improved versions of the original design. The M8 carriage featured metal wheels fitted with pneumatic tyres, making the gun easier to move by infantry and improving its suitability for mobile operations.
The M1 and M1A1 pack howitzers were widely used by American forces during the Second World War. They were particularly important for airborne formations, which required artillery weapons that could be transported by aircraft, gliders or parachute delivery.
The howitzer was also extensively used by the U.S. Marine Corps during operations in the Pacific, where its relatively low weight and portability were valuable in jungle and island environments. The weapon was also supplied to several Allied countries, including France, Great Britain, Turkey and Pakistan.
Serial production continued from 1927 to 1944, resulting in approximately 8,400 examples. After the war, the design remained in service in many countries and received the designation M116 in 1962.
