In accordance with the FIA requirements for Group C in the racing sports car world championships, in June 1981 Porsche began to design a two-seat racing car. In this 956 C a high value was placed on the aerodynamics. Thanks to special air ducts a floor effect was produced that made extremely high cornering speeds possible. The six cylinder engine of the 956 with a capacity of 2.7 litres gave it a top speed of over 350 km/h at 620 bhp (from 1983 it became 640 bhp). The Group C era was to be a period of huge motor sports success for Porsche. In the early 1980s Porsche took numerous world championship titles, victories in the 24-hour races at Le Mans and long distance races with their dominant 956 C.
