The U.S.S. Kearsarge (LDH-3) is a modern US Navy amphibious assault ship of the Wasp Class. On board there are about 40 aircraft (helicopters and vertical take-off planes), numerous combat vehicles and up to 1,894 troops of the Marine Corps. In addition the floodable stern well deck holds a number of landing craft which transport the vehicles and troops to shore. The main role of these ships is to support marine landings. In addition each LHD has extensive medical facilities for up to 600 wounded. The vessel which is 257.2 m long has a crew of about 1,100 men.
