The Do 228 is a light aircraft for regional transport. For the surveillance of shipping in the North Sea and the Baltic the German Ministry of Transport had 2 machines designated 228 LM equipped for tracking environmental infractions at sea. These were designed to track marine pollution and in particular to trace the illegal dumping of used oil by shipping. The Dornier 228 also flies in the Netherlands within the framework of European environmental monitoring.
