Twin engine Do 17 fast bombers were intended to outrun anything the Allies could put in the air and still drop their bombs on target. Z-10 variants, by contrast, were fitted with infrared searchlights and more guns for use on night missions. The guns and search equipment gave the Dorniers a chance against heavy bombers flying at night.
