Fighting in the Ardennes

The Battle of the Ardennes began in December 1944 and was the last major offensive of German forces on the Western Front. The Germans intended to break through the Allied lines in the Ardennes region, seize the Meuse crossings, and reach Antwerp, hoping to split the Allied forces.

The fighting took place in harsh winter conditions, in a forested and undulating area, which significantly affected the manner of operations. German soldiers had to cope with low temperatures, snow, and limited visibility. Winter equipment and clothing were an important element of the soldiers' equipment during these operations.

After initial successes, the German offensive was halted by the Allies. In January 1945, German troops were driven from most of the previously captured territory, and the Ardennes operations ended in strategic defeat.
