This plastic model kit depicts the German Raupenschlepper Ost RSO/01 tracked tractor towing a two-axle Sd.Anh. Ost cargo trailer with a payload capacity of 1.5 tonnes. The vehicle and trailer represent a military transport combination used to move supplies and equipment in support of German forces during World War II.
The kit features a detailed tracked chassis, driver's cab, cargo bed and trailer construction. Photo-etched parts and decals are included to enhance the model and reproduce three marking options. These depict vehicles on the Western Front in 1943, on the Eastern Front in 1944, and with the 1st Ski-Jäger Brigade during the winter of 1943–1944.
This is a plastic model kit intended for assembly and painting. The parts require gluing, while the photo-etched components allow finer structural details to be reproduced. Glue and paints must be purchased separately.
The Raupenschlepper Ost, commonly abbreviated to RSO, was a German tracked tractor developed in response to the difficult transport conditions encountered on the Eastern Front. After the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, German forces quickly discovered that conventional trucks and wheeled vehicles struggled on muddy roads, in deep snow and across uneven terrain.
The vehicle was developed to meet the needs of supply units, artillery formations and troops operating far from paved roads. Its design drew on existing automotive technology and components, including solutions associated with the Austrian manufacturer Steyr. Production began in 1942.
The RSO featured a relatively simple construction, high ground clearance and wide tracks that distributed its weight over a larger surface area than conventional trucks. These characteristics helped it negotiate mud and snow, while its straightforward design facilitated maintenance under field conditions. However, it was not a fast vehicle, with a maximum speed of approximately 30 km/h.
The initial production version, the RSO/01, featured an enclosed steel cab with a truck-like appearance and a wooden cargo bed. It was powered by a Steyr V8 petrol engine with a displacement of approximately 3.5 litres and an output of 85 hp. Its tracked running gear enabled it to operate in terrain where conventional wheeled trucks often lost mobility.
The RSO was primarily used to transport ammunition, food, fuel and other supplies, as well as to tow artillery pieces and trailers. It proved particularly useful with artillery units and formations operating on poorly maintained roads. Later versions incorporated simplified cab designs and other technical changes intended to streamline production and adapt the vehicle to wartime requirements.
The RSO chassis was also used as the basis for the RSO/PaK 40 tank destroyer, armed with a 75 mm anti-tank gun. This variant attempted to combine tracked mobility with the ability to engage armoured vehicles. However, its high silhouette and limited crew protection prevented it from becoming a fully effective tank destroyer.
To carry additional supplies, the tractor could tow a dedicated two-axle Sd.Anh. Ost trailer. Its construction included a steel frame, wooden side panels and two axles. With a payload capacity of 1.5 tonnes, it could transport supplies and equipment without requiring an additional powered vehicle.
Trailers of this type were used to carry a variety of military loads. Their simple construction facilitated manufacture and repairs, while pairing them with a tracked tractor helped maintain transport capability on difficult routes. Depending on the version and equipment, differences could be found in wheel arrangements and protective features intended to limit the effects of mud and snow on the running gear.
The name Raupenschlepper Ost translates literally as “East Tracked Tractor”, reflecting the vehicle's original intended theatre of operations. Developed primarily for the conditions encountered on the Eastern Front, the RSO proved practical enough to be used in other areas of military operations as well. Approximately 23,000 vehicles of all versions are estimated to have been produced.
