A Bundeswehr Utility Vehicle with a Rotating Machine-Gun Mount

This model represents the military version of the German Unimog S 404 off-road truck, equipped with a Drehringlafette rotating gun mount. The circular frame mounted above the cab allowed the weapon to be aimed through a full 360-degree arc. The mount was designed to accommodate an MG3 machine gun.

The history of the Unimog S 404 began in the post-war period, when the Bundeswehr required a light and versatile vehicle capable of operating in difficult off-road conditions. The truck had a wheelbase of 2,900 mm and a payload capacity of 1.5 tonnes. It was powered by a 2,195 cc six-cylinder petrol engine producing 82 hp. Its sturdy frame, four-wheel drive and well-designed suspension provided excellent cross-country performance.

The Unimog S 404 was produced in numerous versions, serving as a cargo truck, ambulance, mobile radio station and workshop vehicle, among other roles. Armed versions equipped with a machine gun on a rotating mount could serve as mobile fire support platforms and engage low-flying aircraft.
