USS Stevens (DD-479) was a Fletcher-class destroyer, part of the largest and one of the most successful series of American destroyers of World War II. The ship was launched in 1942 and entered service in May 1943.
The ship was distinguished by its unusual design. As part of a research program, the forward main gun turret was removed, replacing it with a deck for operating an OS2U Kingfisher observation floatplane. The aim of the experiment was to test the feasibility of using a small aircraft for reconnaissance and artillery fire control without the use of an aircraft carrier.
This solution proved impractical in combat conditions and was not implemented on other ships. USS Stevens remains the only Fletcher-class destroyer equipped with this system, earning her a unique place in U.S. Navy history.
