A 1:72 scale plastic model kit depicting the unusual French Renault YS II, an armoured artillery observation and command vehicle developed in the late 1930s. Based on the AMR 35 light tank chassis, it was designed to provide artillery units with a mobile observation and communications platform.
The Renault YS II featured a distinctive upper structure with a small turret housing optical observation equipment, including a rangefinder. It was also equipped with radio and telephone communications systems, allowing it to coordinate artillery fire and maintain contact with other units. Its unusual appearance makes it an interesting subject for collectors of interwar and early World War II military vehicles.
This model is intended for assembly and painting. Glue and paints are not included and must be purchased separately.
The Renault YS II was developed in France during the second half of the 1930s as a specialised artillery observation vehicle. Its design was based on the Renault YS command and communications vehicle, which in turn used the chassis and mechanical components of the AMR 35 light tank.
Development of the YS II began in 1936, when an existing YS prototype was converted to the new standard. Unlike the original command vehicle, the YS II was fitted with a small turret containing a rangefinder and other optical equipment required for observing artillery targets. Radio and telephone equipment provided communication with artillery units and command posts.
The vehicle was intended to act as a mobile observation and command post, helping artillery commanders locate targets, direct fire and coordinate operations. Its compact dimensions, however, limited the space available for the specialised equipment and crew. The additional equipment also placed considerable demands on the relatively light chassis.
Testing revealed problems with the installation of the rangefinder and radio equipment. The vehicle was not ready for trials until the spring of 1938, and further development proved unsuccessful. The Renault YS II was considered an unsatisfactory design, mainly because of its overloaded chassis and reliability issues. It never entered mass production, making it a particularly rare and unusual example of French military vehicle development in the years before World War II.
The Renault YS II illustrates an interesting aspect of interwar military development: the growing importance of communications, observation and coordination on the battlefield. Although the project did not lead to a successful production vehicle, it remains a fascinating subject for military history enthusiasts and scale modellers interested in rare French armoured vehicles.
