Polski Fiat 508/518 is one of the most important military vehicles of the Second Polish Republic, developed based on the experiences of a modernizing army before the outbreak of World War II. Its history begins in the mid-193s when the Polish armed forces started searching for a versatile vehicle suitable both for transporting soldiers and equipment, as well as a base for building specialized military versions.
The 508/518 design was based on the adapted chassis and components of two civilian Fiat models produced under license: 508 Balilla and the larger 518 Ardita, manufactured by the Polish Automobile Factory (PWS) in Warsaw. Thanks to this, a lightweight off-road vehicle was created, combining durability, simple construction, and ease of repair in field conditions.
The Polski Fiat 508/518 was introduced in 1935, and by September 1939, about 2,000 units were produced in several body variants. The most numerous version was a light passenger off-road car, but sanitary, radio car, communications car, and light truck versions were also produced. A characteristic feature was the split frame allowing easy replacement of the rear body part, enabling multifunctional use of the vehicle.
The 508/518 vehicles participated in many military operations during the September 1939 campaign, serving in infantry, cavalry, and armored units. After the defeat, some of these vehicles were taken over by the German and Soviet armies, where they were also used due to their reliability. Today, the few surviving examples are valuable museum exhibits, reminding us of Polish automotive solutions from the interwar period.
