The F-4J is an improved version of the F-4B, ​​the first mass-produced F-4 model, with improved radar, landing gear, and engine. It first flew in May 1966, and deployment to units began in December of the same year. By the end of 1972, approximately 520 aircraft of this version had been produced. F-4Js participated in the Vietnam War, and many pilots flying them successfully engaged MiG fighters, often emerging victorious in these encounters - earning them the nickname "MiG Killers."

The decals include the markings of two "MiG Killers" from VF-114 (114th Fighter Squadron) "Aardvarks" based on the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier, as well as the markings of one aircraft from VF-21 (21st Fighter Squadron) "Freelancers" which operated the F-4J from 1968 to 1979 and was based on the USS Ranger aircraft carrier.
