The Douglas A-20 Havoc was an American twin-engine attack aircraft and light bomber used during World War II. The aircraft was designed as a fast ground-attack plane; depending on the variant, it could also perform bombing, reconnaissance, and night-fighter roles.
The A-20G variant featured a distinctive solid nose, housing heavy armament instead of the glazed bombardier's station. Six 12.7 mm machine guns provided significant firepower for ground-attack missions. Aircraft of this variant saw extensive service in both the Pacific and European theaters.
The A-20 Havoc was notable for its high speed at low altitudes, excellent handling characteristics, and robust construction. The crew was protected by armor, and the aircraft could carry a substantial bomb load. In the Pacific theater, the A-20 was frequently used to attack Japanese airfields, artillery emplacements, transport, and troop positions. In Europe, aircraft of this type performed tasks such as ground force support and the bombing of tactical targets.
