The KV-2 heavy tank was developed in Leningrad in 1940, and its production was launched at the Kirov Plant in the same year. The tank was designed to break through heavily fortified enemy defenses by destroying pillboxes and bunkers with direct fire. The turret housed the M-10T 152.4 mm tank howitzer model 1938/40 for this purpose. Early KV-2 tanks were produced with a so-called "large turret", and late tanks - with a large "low" turret of smaller weight. The KV-2 fought in the defensive battles early in the Great Patriotic War. A total of 204 KV-2 tanks were made at the Leningrad Kirov Plant from February 1940 to June 1941.
