The Mil Mi-4 (NATO reporting name "Hound") was a Russian multipurpose helicopter developed at Mikhail Leontyevich Mil's Experimental Design Bureau in the early 1950s. It was the first military transport helicopter of the Soviet Armed Forces. The Mi-4 had the same layout of the propulsion with a piston engine as the American Sikorsky S-55, but excelled the latter in its lifting capacity more than twice. A spacious cargo compartment accommodated up to 1,600 kg of cargo or 12 completely equipped paratroopers. The Mi-4 became the first Russian helicopter fitted with a cargo door at the rear with tail back flaps and a going down loading ramp. It was the main troop-transport helicopter of the Warsaw Pact in the 1950-1970s. The Chinese licensed copy of the Mi-4, "Harbin" Z-5, is still in service of the Armed Forces in the North Korea. A total of about 4,000 Mi-4 & Z-5 helicopters were produced in the USSR and China in 1952-1979.

• Mil Mi-4A - a troop-transport helicopter;
• Mil Mi-4P - a passenger helicopter for a transportation of 8-11 people and 200 kg of cargo;
• Mil Mi-4AV - an armed version of the Mi-4A for a support to ground troops.
