Russia's highest-scoring ace, Alexander Kozakov, entered the army in 1908 and transferred to aviation in 1913. Initially flying reconnaissance and bombing missions in a Morane-Saulnier, he scored his first victory in 1915 by ramming an enemy aircraft. He later commanded the 1st Combat Air Group, achieving 20 victories before resigning in 1918. Joining British forces at Murmansk, he led the Slavo-British Air Detachment, continuing combat missions despite injuries. Depressed by the British withdrawal in 1919, Kozakov died on 1 August, crashing his Sopwith during a low-altitude maneuver. Some sources list his name as Kosakoff.
