Mustangs, known for their combat operations over Europe in the Allied air forces, were primarily thoroughbred fighters that effectively escorted the "Flying Fortresses" raids on the Reich and led to the final destruction of the German Luftwaffe. No less important and interesting were the battles against the Japanese, in which Mustangs took part in areas such as China and Burma.
In the so-called CBI Theater (China-Burma-India), the way aviation was used was very different from the European one. Instead of large strategic air raids, tactical operations dominated, consisting of supporting the ground forces, defending them from enemy aircraft, attacking ground targets and reconnaissance. Also in this role, the fast and powerful Mustang proved itself excellently, thanks to its large payload becoming an effective attack aircraft and even a dive bomber, equipped with various bombs and missiles, capable of operating safely without escort!
Designed in the USA for British orders, the North American P-51 Mustang was initially produced with an American Allison engine, adapted for low altitude. This version proved successful and entered the equipment of not only the RAF, but also the US Air Force. These aircraft were best suited for reconnaissance and attack, at high altitudes they lacked power. The problem was solved by using the legendary British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, which, manufactured under license by Packard, made the Mustang the best fighter of World War II. Mass production of the new version of the Mustang was carried out at North American plants in California under the designation P-51B-NA and in Texas as P-51C-NT. A total of 3,738 aircraft of versions B and C were produced. About 900 of them, under the designation Mustang Mk III, were transferred to the RAF and to the Polish Air Force, RAAF, RCAF and Free French. Introduced into service in late 1943, from mid-1944 they were gradually replaced by aircraft of the new P-51D/K version.
