The Mil Mi-24 is a Soviet/Russian attack helicopter developed by the Mil Experimental Design Bureau in the end of the 1960's. It became the first Russian (European) and the second in the world specialized combat helicopter. The Mi-24 was exported to many countries of the world. It was massively used by Soviet troops in the war in Afghanistan. These helicopters were the main striking force of the Army aviation of the Russian Air Force in the fighting in both Chechen campaigns. The Mi-24 is used in many regional conflicts including the Syrian Civil War. The Mil Mi-24 is the second most common attack helicopter in the world. The Mil Mi-24V (Hind-E) is the most massive version of the Mi-24. It entered production in 1976 and was first seen by the west in the early 1980's. The key feature of this modification is the Yakushev-Borzov YakB-12.7 remotely controlled 12.7 mm calibre four-barrel Gatling gun. It is armed with the more advanced 9M114 Shturm-V. Eight of those missile are mounted on four outer wing pylons. The B-8V20A 20-barrel units (launchers for the S-8 80 mm calibre unguided rockets) also appeared in the armament of the helicopter. It was the most widely produced version of the Mi-24 with more than 1,000 made.
