The Mil Mi-8 is a Soviet multirole helicopter developed by the Mil Experimental Design Bureau in the beginning of the 1960's. It is the most popular twin-engine helicopter in the world, and it also included in the list of the most popular helicopters in the aviation history. The Mi-8 is widely used for many civil and military tasks. The first prototype flew on 24 June 1961. After several modifications the Mi-8 was adopted by the Soviet Air Forces in 1968. It has proved so successful machine that its procurement for the Russian Aerospace Forces is still going on. The Mi-8 is used by over 50 countries around the world. The modernization of the helicopter was completed in the late 1970's. It has led to the creation of an improved version of this machine - the Mi-8 MT with more powerful engines and an auxiliary gas-turbine engine. The Mil Mi-8 MTV-2 helicopter was developed in the 1990's. It is an armed military transport version with a reinforced armour, more powerful high-altitude engines, a new tail rotor, a system of landing without parachutes and a board arm with greater load capacity.
