The XA-22 mid-range bomber was developed by Glenn L. Martin Company in 1938. First serial built machines computed with French avionics and armament were ordered by French Air Force - Martin M-167 A3 (115 + 100 machines). Only 145 of them were delivered to France before its capitulation. The rest were bought by RAF and the order for 115 ones more was placed. Some of them were handed over to the South African Air Force. In RAF a new bomber was named Martin "Maryland". "Marylands" were used in 1940 in France, later and more widely in North Africa and Sicily (1940-1941). Absence of armor and fuel tanks protection, poor armament led to big losses that forced the firm to create a new type named "Baltimore". From 1941 "Marylands" were replaced by new types in all war theatres. In total 331 aircraft of the type were produced.
