Aleksandr Ivanovich Pokryshkin was the WWII Soviet Air Force fighter pilot rated second in terms of enemy aircraft downed. The future ace, who was awarded the top Soviet military award – the title of Hero of the Soviet Union – three times, scored his first kill on the Mikoyan-Gurevich 3 fighter by shooting down a Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf.109 in June 23, 1941. A. I. Pokryshkin flew his Mikoyan-Gurevich 3 (side number 5) as part of the 16th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Air Defense Force in 1941-1942. During the war, Pokryshkin made 650 sorties, conducted 156 air battles and shot down 59 enemy aircraft personally and 6 as part of a package.
