The Polikarpov I-16 fighter was among the world’s best high-speed fighters in the second half of the 1930s. The I-16 was the mainstay of the aircraft fleet of the Red Army’s Air Force in the run-up to the Great Patriotic War. An outstanding person, Polikarpov’s chief test pilot Valery Pavlovich Chkalov, a hero of the Soviet Union, played an important part in the plane’s future. Chkalov became famous for his non-stop flights on the ANT-25 plane. He did a lot to enable the fighter to enter full-rate production. When the I-16 entered service with the Air Force, Chkalov visited combat units to display the fighter’s exceptional combat capabilities during his demonstration flights.
