On April 25, 1975 a State flag was raised on the first future conqueror of the North Pole, the nuclear powered icebreaker "Arctica" at the Baltic Shipyard in Leningrad. On August 17, 1977 this surface ship went through ice of the Central Polar Basin to the northernmost point on Earth. It was at the very first time in the history of seafaring. On August 24, 2005 in the 30-year anniversary of her exploitation the nuclear powered vessel passed the million mile since a day of putting her into operation. The ship was officially taken out of service in October 2008. Technical characteristics of the nuclear powered icebreaker "Arctica": length – 148 meters, width – 30 meters, displacement – 23.5 thousand tons, speed in open water – 20 knots, ice-passability – 2 meters.
