The first Russian serial heavy self-propelled gun was built on the chassis of the KV-1S tank. The SU-152 (KV-14) was designed to break through enemy defenses during offensive operations of the Red Army. It was adopted for service in February 14, 1943. The 152.4 mm ML-20S howitzer-gun, which is well proven in combating with German heavy tanks, was mounted on the SU-152. The self-propelled gun was actively used at the Kursk Bulge in summer 1943, where it was dubbed "Zveroboy" ("beastslayer" in Russian, an allusion to the designations of German tanks – the Tiger and the Panther). 670 vehicles of this type were built at the Chelyabinsk Kirov Plant from February to December 1943.
