The KV-1S heavy tank ("S" stands for "skorostnoy" - high-speed in Russian) was developed in summer 1942. It was based on the KV-1 model 1941. The tank featured enhanced agility and reliability over the previous versions, though its armor protection was reduced somewhat compared with the baseline model. The KV-1S was adopted on August 20, 1942 and had been in production till September 1943. The tank was widespread during the Great Patriotic War, with a total of 1,085 units built.
