The KV-9 was developed on the basis of the KV-1 in late 1941 in order to enhance the firepower of heavy tanks. The designers intended that it should be a universal tank which is capable to struggle against tanks, fortifications and manpower of the opponent. The KV-9 was armed with the U-11 121.92 mm howitzer (the tank version of the M-30 field howitzer) and three DT 7.62 mm machineguns. To protect against antitank artillery thickness of the frontal armor was increased to 135 mm. The prototype ("Object 229") successfully passed its tests in February 1942. Originally Chelyabinsk Kirov Plant planned to release pre-series batch of 10 machines, but actually managed to make only one more KV-9 tank.
