The KV-1 Russian heavy tank ("KV" stands for Klim Voroshilov, a high-ranking military leader of that time) is the first domestic heavy tank having one-turret layout. The KV-1 was adopted in 1939. The dire situation on the front in 1941, evacuation of factories to the rear and shortage of skilled workforce necessitated modifications of the KV-1 heavy tank to simplify its design and reduce its production cost without a reduction in its output rate. The tank model 1941 got a redesigned hull and turret and a modified running gear. A total of 2,769 KV-1 tanks were made from February 1940 to August 1942. They were heavily used in battles early in the Great Patriotic War.
