From May 1938 to August 1939, Daimler-Benz and MAN produced 143 Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.D and E light tanks for a service with tank battalions of the Wehrmacht’s light divisions. It was so-called "Schnellkampfwagen" - a high-speed tank. The tanks featured a more powerful new engine, a chassis with a torsion bar suspension, as well as a modified hull. The turret and armament remained unchanged. The D and E versions of the Pz.Kpfw.II participated in the Invasion of Poland by Germany and Slovakia in the autumn of 1939. In March 1940, due to their poor cross-country ability the Pz.Kpfw.II Ausf.D/E tanks were taken out of service and converted into Flammpanzer II flamethrower tanks or "Marder" self-propelled guns.
