The Weathering Aircraft 25 – Painting and Weathering with Acrylics

The 25th issue of The Weathering Aircraft magazine is dedicated to painting and weathering aircraft models with acrylic paints. Acrylics are among the most widely used paints in aircraft modelling, and the development of new products, including the ATOM range, offers modelers even more possibilities for achieving realistic results.

Acrylic paints are easy to use and allow modelers to achieve convincing finishes with relatively little effort. Their durability also makes it possible to apply additional layers of paint and weathering products over the finished surface. They offer a convenient alternative to many products based on other solvents, without the same strong odours associated with some traditional modelling paints.

Acrylics are suitable not only for painting but also for creating realistic weathering effects. Blending colors and building up successive layers allows modelers to reproduce everything from subtle rust streaks to heavy wear and tear. Acrylic weathering products include paints, washes, filters, varnishes, Shaders, and dry-brushing colors.

This issue features a wide variety of aircraft and finishes, including a heavily weathered Soviet Mi-24 Hind helicopter, a Ukrainian Su-27 Flanker in a modern digital camouflage scheme, the iconic Messerschmitt Bf 109G, the US Cold War-era F-105G Republic Thunderchief, a Hawker Hurricane depicted after a crash in North Africa, and a Ju 87G Stuka in 1/35 scale.

The articles demonstrate how to use essential acrylic products, including primers, standard and metallic paints, filters, washes, Shaders, and dry-brushing colors. Step-by-step instructions guide readers through the techniques, helping them choose the methods best suited to their own preferences and modelling projects.

This issue is a practical guide for modelers who want to explore the versatility of acrylic paints and use them for both painting and realistic weathering of aircraft models.
