The Westland Sea King HAR.3 was developed as a dedicated search and rescue (SAR) helicopter for the Royal Air Force. Entering service in 1978 as the replacement for the Westland Whirlwind HAR.10, it quickly became the RAF's primary long-range rescue helicopter. With its excellent endurance, reliable twin-engine design and ability to operate in severe weather conditions, the Sea King played a vital role in countless rescue missions over the sea, mountains and remote areas of the United Kingdom.
A typical crew consisted of two pilots, a winch operator and an aircrewman responsible for rescue operations. In 1992, the upgraded HAR.3A version entered service with improved avionics and a modern navigation system. Sea King HAR.3 helicopters remained on continuous search and rescue duty throughout the United Kingdom and the Falkland Islands until their retirement from RAF service in 2016. Throughout their long operational career, these helicopters saved thousands of lives and became one of the most respected rescue aircraft in British aviation history.
