A Century of Swedish Military Aviation in a Single Set

Swedish Air Force 100th Anniversary Set is a special set commemorating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Swedish Air Force. The box contains five aircraft models representing different stages in the development of Swedish military aviation – from foreign-designed aircraft used during the early years of Flygvapnet, through piston-engined aircraft, to the indigenous jet designs developed by Saab.

The set allows you to build a small cross-section collection showcasing the diversity of aircraft operated by the Swedish Air Force. The set contains a total of 287 parts, while skill level 2 makes it a suitable choice also for less experienced modellers.

Contents of the Set

  • Gloster Gladiator Mk.I (J-8) with skis,
  • North American P-51D Mustang (J-26),
  • Supermarine Spitfire PR Mk.XIX (S-31),
  • De Havilland Vampire T.11 (J-28C),
  • Saab J35 Draken,
  • 287 plastic parts in total,
  • decals,
  • assembly instructions,
  • painting and marking instruction sheets.

Five Aircraft – Five Different Eras

Gloster Gladiator Mk.I (J-8) represents the early years of Swedish military aviation. This British biplane was operated by Flygvapnet before the era of modern monoplane fighters. The set includes the distinctive ski-equipped configuration, suitable for operations in winter conditions.

North American P-51D Mustang (J-26) represents another stage in the development of fighter aviation. The Swedish Air Force operated Mustangs after the end of World War II, where the aircraft received the designation J-26. The Mustang's distinctive silhouette, slender fuselage and large wings provide an interesting contrast with the other aircraft in the set.

Supermarine Spitfire PR Mk.XIX (S-31) represents specialised reconnaissance aviation. This late version of the Spitfire was powered by a Griffon engine and adapted for photographic reconnaissance missions. The Swedish Air Force operated Spitfires designated S-31 during the post-war period.

De Havilland Vampire T.11 (J-28C) introduces the first generation of Swedish jet aircraft to the set. The two-seat trainer version was used for advanced pilot training and preparing pilots for the operation of jet aircraft.

Saab J35 Draken is the most distinctive example of Swedish aerospace engineering represented in the set. With its characteristic double-delta wing and supersonic performance, the Draken became one of the most recognisable Swedish combat aircraft.

Assembly Information

The models are designed for assembly and require gluing and painting. Construction requires plastic model cement and suitable modelling paints.

A Modelling Journey Through the History of Flygvapnet

The variety of aircraft included means that the set is more than simply a collection of five aircraft – it provides a cross-section of the development of Swedish military aviation. Alongside the British-designed Gladiator, Spitfire and Vampire and the American Mustang is the Swedish Saab J35 Draken, symbolising the growing independence of the Swedish aerospace industry.

The five different designs also offer a wide range of possibilities during assembly and painting. The ski-equipped biplane, classic Mustang, reconnaissance Spitfire, two-seat Vampire and futuristic Draken form an exceptionally diverse collection that can be displayed together as a tribute to the history of the Swedish Air Force.

Development of Swedish Military Aviation

At the beginning of World War II, the Swedish Air Force had around 180 aircraft of various types, many of them sourced from Great Britain, the United States, Germany and Italy. Due to its policy of neutrality, Sweden had to rely on both foreign designs and the development of its own aviation industry.

The first Swedish-designed aircraft appeared in the 1940s, and over time the country developed its own highly distinctive line of combat aircraft. This development eventually led, among other designs, to the Saab J35 Draken, which became one of the most advanced European fighters of its generation.

One of the distinctive features of Sweden's approach to operating military aircraft was the dispersal of aircraft bases. Some aircraft could operate from prepared sections of roads, increasing the resilience of the air force against attack and allowing the public road network to be used as an alternative runway system.
