Airfix A04206V features the German battleship Scharnhorst in 1:600 scale. Part of the Vintage Classics range, this kit brings back one of Airfix's classic naval models. Consisting of 159 parts, it is designed for modellers aged 8 and above (Skill Level 3).
The model accurately reproduces the distinctive appearance of one of the Kriegsmarine's most famous capital ships. The sleek hull, imposing superstructure and three triple-gun main turrets faithfully capture the unique profile of Scharnhorst. Armed with nine 11-inch (280 mm) guns, the ship was one of the fastest battleships of its era and became renowned for its long-range commerce raiding operations. The completed model measures approximately 385 mm in length, making it an impressive addition to any collection of World War II warships.
The kit includes plastic parts, decals, detailed assembly instructions and painting guides with the manufacturer's recommended Humbrol paint references. Airfix provides one authentic historical marking option.
Scharnhorst was the lead ship of her class, built for the German Kriegsmarine during the mid-1930s and commissioned in January 1939. Designed as a fast capital ship capable of long-range commerce raiding, she combined heavy armour, high speed and powerful armament. Although equipped with nine 11-inch main guns rather than the larger-calibre weapons carried by many contemporary battleships, Scharnhorst proved to be a formidable opponent thanks to her speed and excellent seakeeping qualities.
During the Second World War, Scharnhorst took part in numerous operations alongside her sister ship Gneisenau, including patrols in the North Atlantic, attacks on Allied merchant shipping and the famous Channel Dash (Operation Cerberus) in 1942. Her final mission took place on 26 December 1943, when she attempted to intercept Arctic convoy JW 55B. During the Battle of the North Cape, Scharnhorst was intercepted by British forces led by HMS Duke of York. After a fierce engagement, she was sunk with the loss of the vast majority of her crew, bringing the operational career of one of Germany's most famous warships to an end.
The instruction booklet includes the complete Humbrol paint guide for the supplied marking option. The recommended colours cover the Kriegsmarine camouflage and deck finishes, together with the appropriate shades for the superstructure, armament, lifeboats and other exterior details.
