Airfix A02016V features the Mitsubishi Ki-46-II "Dinah" in 1:72 scale. Part of the Vintage Classics range, this kit brings back one of Airfix's classic aircraft models. Consisting of 51 parts, it is designed for modellers aged 8 and above (Skill Level 2).
The kit accurately captures the sleek lines of one of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force's most successful reconnaissance aircraft. Its streamlined fuselage, twin-engine configuration and extensively glazed crew compartment give the finished model an elegant appearance while reflecting the advanced aerodynamic design of the original aircraft. With a completed wingspan of approximately 152 mm, the model makes an attractive addition to any World War II aircraft collection.
The kit includes parts and decals for two historical marking options. Inside the box are plastic components, a detailed instruction booklet, decals and painting guides with the manufacturer's recommended Humbrol paint references.
The Mitsubishi Ki-46 was developed in the late 1930s as a high-speed reconnaissance aircraft for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. The aircraft was designed to fly long-range intelligence missions at speeds and altitudes that would allow it to avoid interception by contemporary fighter aircraft. The result was an exceptionally streamlined twin-engine aircraft with excellent performance and impressive operational range.
The Ki-46-II became the most widely produced version of the type. Throughout the Second World War it carried out reconnaissance missions over China, Southeast Asia and the Pacific, providing vital intelligence on Allied troop movements and military installations. As the war progressed, some aircraft were converted into interceptor and ground-attack variants, but the reconnaissance role remained its primary mission. The Ki-46 earned a reputation for its high speed, excellent handling characteristics and elegant design. According to Airfix, the aircraft's performance impressed the Luftwaffe to such an extent that Germany reportedly considered acquiring a licence to manufacture the type.
The instruction booklet supplied with the kit includes the complete Humbrol paint guide for both marking options. The recommended colours cover the camouflage schemes used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force, together with the appropriate shades for undersurfaces, cockpit details, propellers and other external components.
