Airfix A01085V features the Avro 504K in 1:72 scale. Part of the Vintage Classics range, this kit brings back one of Airfix's most iconic aircraft models. Consisting of 37 parts, it is designed for modellers aged 8 and above (Skill Level 2).
Despite its relatively low part count, the kit accurately captures the distinctive appearance of one of the most famous biplanes of the early aviation era. The characteristic twin-wing configuration, open cockpit, fixed tail-skid undercarriage and delicate structural details faithfully represent this classic British trainer. Once assembled, the model has a wingspan of approximately 152 mm.
The kit includes parts and decals for two historical marking options. Inside the box are plastic components, a comprehensive instruction booklet, decals and painting guides with the manufacturer's recommended paint references.
The Avro 504 was one of the most significant British aircraft of the early twentieth century. Its prototype first flew in 1913, and with the outbreak of the First World War the aircraft quickly entered military service. Initially employed for reconnaissance, light bombing and pilot training, it soon proved to be an exceptionally reliable and versatile design.
The best-known version, the Avro 504K, featured a universal engine mounting that allowed different powerplants to be installed depending on availability. This flexibility, combined with forgiving handling characteristics and a robust airframe, made it the primary training aircraft of the Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force. Thousands of military pilots completed their initial flying training on the Avro 504K before progressing to operational aircraft.
More than 8,300 examples of all Avro 504 variants were built, making it the most-produced British military aircraft of the First World War. Following the conflict, the type remained in service for many years with military and civilian operators around the world, continuing to train pilots well into the 1930s.
The instruction booklet supplied with the kit includes the complete Humbrol paint guide for both marking options. The recommended colours cover the finishes typically associated with First World War British aircraft, including natural wood, clear-doped linen, metal components and other period-specific details.
