Description

The American self-propelled artillery vehicle produced during World War II was officially called the 105mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7. It was given the nickname Priest when it went in British service, due to the pulpit like machine gun ring. The full British designation was the 105mm SP, Priest.

It had a crew of seven, and was powered by either a Continental R-975 with either a 400 or 340 HP engine. The main armament was its 105mm M1/M2 Howitzer with 69 rounds and secondary armament was 300 rounds from a mounted .50 MG. It was able to reach 40mph and had a 193 mile range. As WWII went on, It was decided to use this M3 Lee chassis as the basis for a new vehicle named the T-32. Designers reworked the M3 by providing an open topped superstructure, and mounting a 105 mm Howitzer. They also added a machine .30 machine gun. The T32 was accepted for service, renamed M7 in February 1942 and production began that April. 3,490 M7s were built and they were considered to be reliable weapons.

Academy?s 1/35 scale M7 Priest contains new tooling, and a whopping 318 parts. The flexible one-piece track, the new movable 105mm Howitzer, and new armor ride on new tooled suspension as well. The finite exterior, transmission & interior drive station detail can be seen on this historically faithful scale model. Both .50 & .30 caliber guns and accessories are included. Academy has given modelers a precise decal set and paint instructions allowing one of four M7 ?Priests? to be built:

- US Army 2nd Armored Div. Sicily, July 1943
- 11th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery 1st Armored Div. El Alamein, 1942
- Battery B 14th AFAB 2nd Armored Div. Normandy France 1944
- 31st Firing Battery 64RADB French 2nd Armored Div. France 1944
